Cockroach Species
Everything You Need to Know About Cockroaches
What cockroaches look like
Cockroaches vary depending on species, but they are typically:
Oval-shaped, flat-bodied insects
Light brown, dark brown or almost black
Fast-moving, often scattering when exposed to light
Adults range from 10 mm to over 50 mm depending on species
Common species include German, American and Brownbanded cockroaches, all
found frequently in South African homes and businesses.
Where Cockroaches Hide
Cockroaches prefer warm, humid, dark areas close to food and water. Typical hiding places include:
Under sinks, stoves and fridges
Inside cupboards and kitchen units
Behind ovens, microwaves and appliances
Drains, ducts and service areas
Bathroom cupboards and plumbing voids
Boxes, clutter and cardboard storage
They are nocturnal, so daytime sightings usually indicate a significant infestation.
A strong oily or musty odour
Droppings resembling coffee grounds or black pepper
Egg cases (oothecae) in cupboards or behind appliances
Shed skins and smear marks
Sightings at night or, worse, during the day
Damage to food packaging
Why Cockroaches Are
a Problem
Spread harmful bacteria including Salmonella & E.coli
Trigger allergies, asthma and respiratory irritation
Contaminate food, surfaces and utensils
Breed extremely fast, each ootheca contains multiple nymphs
Survive in harsh conditions and resist many DIY products
Cockroaches quickly become overwhelming without proper treatment.
How Cockroach Infestations Start
Cockroaches can enter through:
Cracks, drains and gaps around plumbing
Groceries, cardboard boxes, packaging or second-hand appliances
Delivery vehicles and storage areas
Multi-unit buildings such as blocks of flats, offices and restaurants
Once inside, they multiply rapidly and spread through entire buildings.
What You Should Do
Keep kitchens clean and free of crumbs
Wipe up spills immediately
Store food in sealed containers
Reduce clutter, especially cardboard
Fix any moisture and leaks
Empty rubbish bins regularly
DIY sprays may kill visible cockroaches but not the hidden nests or egg cases. Professional treatment is the only reliable way to eliminate an infestation fully.

How to Prevent a cockroach infestation
Seal cracks around sinks, plumbing and skirting boards
Keep drains covered and clean
Reduce humidity and standing water
Don’t leave dirty dishes overnight
Vacuum behind appliances
Inspect incoming boxes, groceries and deliveries
